you must learn English in Valencia with us! Now we are going to speak about Phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs have always been a problematic nightmare for every learner of English. We have always tried to memorize hundreds of phrasal verbs but we couldn't because there was no relation between the first meaning of the words that comes to our mind and the phrasal verb itself. Eventually, they end up in our short-term memory and disappear as time passes. We should take into account that they may have different meanings and they are used in specific conditions. Keeping that in mind, phrasal verbs are not that difficult if we think that they are idiomatic verbs in relation to some adverbs just like ''break down'' or a prepositions ''hang on''. These two elements come together and create another meaning just like idioms and we need to use them in our own sentences to learn them permanently. The list that we will use as a guide today is the first fifteen of the list of 150 most common phrasal verbs made by the linguists Mélodie Garnier and Norbert Schmitt. Let's get started!
1: GO ON = happen
- What's going on?
- There's an argument going on at the moment.
2: PICK UP = get something or someone from a place
- I picked up my daughter from the school.
- Do not hesitate to pick up some more tea.
3: COME BACK = return to a place (the speaker is in that place)
- She will come back around 10pm tomorrow.
- When will you come back from Istanbul?
4: COME UP WITH = produce an idea
- My colleague came with a brilliant idea.
- Can you come up with a better project?
5: GO BACK = return to a place (the speaker isn't in that place)
- He finished his class and went back to his town.
- When are you planning to go back to your hometown?
6: FIND OUT = get information
- Can you find out what is the problem at work?
- I found out that coronavirus is so serious.
7: COME OUT = appear from a place
- She came out of the bathroom.
- They went to the festival and came out with a lot of memories.
8: GO OUT = go to an event / restaurant / pub / party
- Let's go out for dinner tonight!
- You're going out a lot these days.
9: POINT OUT = show / mention
- She pointed out the importance of a second language.
- Please point out to the people that they need to obey the rules.
10: GROW UP = become an adult
- I grew up in Spain.
- My children are growing up too fast!
